On-Campus Research Opportunities

Undergraduate research opportunities flourish on the campus because UNT values undergraduate research and the benefits it offers to students, faculty, and even the institution itself.  You can become involved in undergraduate research through some of the following opportunities.

University Scholars Day

Each year, the Office of the Provost and the Honors College host University Scholars Day, a celebration of undergraduate research, students, and mentors at UNT. Learn more about University Scholars Day.

Internships and Cooperative Education

Internships and Cooperative Education gives you a broader educational experience through work with area businesses. Often, these positions can lead to full-time employment upon graduation.

Visit Internships and Cooperative Education to learn more, and to apply for internships at the National Institutes of Health.  The office is located in Suite 155 at Chestnut Hall.

Center for Leadership and Service

Most of the opportunities available through the Center for Leadership and Service are for community service and volunteer activities, but there may be some agencies looking for volunteers to do research.

The Center for Leadership and Service is located in Room 324 in the University Union.  The center's phone number is 940-565-3021.  E-mail service.volunteer@unt.edu.

Survey Research Center

The Survey Research Center conducts research for clients in the public and private sector throughout the United States. They need students who are interested in working as telephone interviewers on their projects. In this paid position, you will learn about the telephone interviewing techniques as a research method, the CATI (Computer Assisted Telephone Interviewing) system, some sampling techniques, and data compilation techniques.

The work hours are flexible and course schedules can easily be accommodated. It is also possible to work on weekends. To learn more, visit the Survey Research Center site, or call the center 940-565-3221 or 1-800-687-7055 (Metro).  The center's e-mail is srcenter@unt.edu.

National Science Foundation Research Experiences

The National Science Foundation funds projects also known as Research Experiences for Undergraduates (REUs) throughout the United States in the following areas:

  • Behavioral and social sciences
  • Life sciences
  • Physical sciences
  • Engineering
  • Computer sciences
  • Mathematics

The foundation currently has two REU sites at UNT.  The sites are within the Department of Anthropology and the Department of Chemistry.  The REU site in the chemistry department focuses on chemistry research in all of the "traditional" areas of chemistry (analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical), and also provides opportunities in many "new" areas including computational chemistry and materials chemistry.

If you are interested, then contact the program directly.  For the Department of Anthropology, contact Dr. Beverly Davenport.  Her e-mail is Beverly.davenport@unt.edu.  The department's phone number is 940-565-2292.

For the Department of Chemistry, contact Susan Brockington, REU Program Coordinator, at 940-565-3554 or at chem-reu@unt.edu.

The Eagle Feather

Each fall, the Honors College publishes an online journal of undergraduate research, The Eagle Feather. Student researchers at UNT are able to submit their scholarly work for possible publication in this fine journal. Review the current and past issues of The Eagle Feather.

Academic Departments

Most undergraduates will find opportunities for research within the department where they are pursuing their major. If you are interested in pursuing undergraduate research, talk first with the advisor in the department of your major to learn about the opportunities that are available.

The Honors College Research Track

Members of the Honors College are invited to take gateway research classes that lead them toward research skills, research projects, faculty mentoring, presentations, and publications. For more information about the Research Track, contact Dr. Susan Eve, Associate Dean, at Susan.Eve@unt.edu, or contact the Honors College office at 940-565-3305 and ask to arrange an appointment with Dr. Eve.
